Richie Benaud has been farewelled at a private service in Sydney’s east, after his family declined the offer of a state funeral. Friends and family gathered at the Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park on Wednesday morning for the service, led by the much-loved cricketer’s close friend and former teammate Brian Booth.
Benaud, a celebrated all-rounder who captained Australia before forging a successful broadcasting career, died in his sleep on Friday aged 84. In the memorial booklet, his family described Benaud as “a special person who means so much to each of us in many different ways”.
The service was followed by a celebration of Benaud’s life at the Australian Golf Club in Rosebery, which was attended by cricketing luminaries including Ian Chappell and Shane Warne. Also present were Nine Network’s chief, David Gyngell, and TV presenter Eddie McGuire.
Pakistan lose injured Shah for Bangladesh series
Pakistan’s leg-spinner Yasir Shah was yesterday ruled out of the upcoming one-day series against Bangladesh, a third injury setback for the tourists in the past two weeks.
Shah, 28, needed three stitches on his left thumb after being hit during a practice match on Wednesday ahead of the first of three one-day internationals in Dhaka today.
A Pakistan Cricket Board release said left-arm spinner Zulfiqar Babar will fly in as a replacement, but it was unclear if Shah would be able to play in the subsequent Test series. Shah played just one match in the recent World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, conceding 60 runs without taking a wicket against India before being ignored for the remaining games.
The leg-spinner has taken 27 wickets in five Tests and two wickets in two one-dayers since his debut in 2011. Two other World Cup squad members, Sohaib Maqsood and Sohail Khan, were earlier ruled out of the tour with injuries.
Babar, who was ignored for the World Cup, has claimed 33 Tests and four one-day wickets.
Pakistan are to play three one-day internationals, a solitary Twenty20 game and two Tests on the month-long tour of Bangladesh.

Saying goodbye is never easy, especially when you are saying farewell to those that have left a positive impression. That was the case earlier this month when Canada hosted Mexico in a friendly at BC Place stadium in Vancouver.
