The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has announced that traffic will be diverted on the road running from the interchange opposite Al Wajba Palace and Garrafat Al Rayyan roundabout (also known as Qatar Academy roundabout) from Friday in order to implement Phase 2 of traffic diversion on the existing Dukhan Road.
A three-lane alternative road will be provided south of the existing Dukhan Road to ease traffic flow. The diversion will also include the opening of a signal U-turn on the alternative road heading north of the existing Dukhan Road towards the interchange opposite Al Wajba Palace.
This U-turn will ease traffic flow for vehicles heading towards Al Ruwad Street as they can avoid using Al Wajba Palace Interchange.
As part of Stage 2, Al Rayyan Road will be closed in both directions from Bani Hajer roundabout to Al Wajba roundabout (also known as Qtel roundabout), which has been converted to a signal-controlled intersection. Incoming traffic from the interchange opposite Al Wajba Palace towards Bani Hajer roundabout must use the alternative route to reach Garrafat Al Rayyan roundabout.
Additionally, motorists heading from Al Rayyan Road in the direction of Bani Hajer roundabout towards the Bani Hajer residential area should use the alternative road south of Dukhan Road to reach Garrafat Al Rayyan roundabout, and then make a U-turn and return to Bani Hajer roundabout and take a right.
Ashghal implemented Phase 1 of the diversion in March and it included diverting traffic flow between Bani Hajer roundabout and the interchange opposite Al Wajba Palace. As part of the project planning process, the authority assessed the current road use to develop alternative three-lane diversions to reduce the impact of diversions on traffic flow in the area as much as possible.
Phases 1 and 2 of the diversion are implemented to give way to construction of the Dukhan Highway East project, part of Ashghal’s vital Expressway Programme, which includes the construction of an approximately 10km dual carriageway consisting of four lanes in each direction with service roads and auxiliary roads along sections of the road.
The traffic diversions have been designed in accordance with the highest standards and requirements due to the magnitude of work that will go into the construction of the existing Dukhan Road, including excavations that will take time and stretch over tens of kilometres.
Four signal junctions will be used during the diversions to control traffic flow and enhance safety for motorists using the alternative roads that have been designed in accordance with the highest international standards and safety requirements. Ashghal will install road signs to advise motorists of the diversion. It has requested all road users to abide by speed limits and follow road signs to ensure safety.
