Streamline bus service
Dear Sir,
The points raised in the letter “Doha deserves better bus service” (Gulf Times, April 22) are quite valid and I hope that the authorities will act upon the suggestions. Most of the buses seem to be plying empty and the reasons for that need to be studied. I am sure that a lot more people in Doha would be willing to use the bus service if it is more rider-friendly.
The main problem now is the open bus stops which don’t protect waiting commuters from the harsh summer heat. If most of the stops are provided with shelters, that would be a great relief to the waiting passengers. It will encourage more people to use the service.
The Central Bus Stop should also be made more comfortable and attractive.
A well-run bus service will solve the traffic congestion on many roads. Owning a car is not a luxury in Doha now, it is a necessity. Taxis are expensive and are hard to come by at many places in Doha. A well laid-out public transport service is essential for Doha, as in all cities.

Make Wakalath Street one-way
Dear Sir,
If both the Wakalath Street and the road that runs parallel to that in the Industrial Area are turned one-way, it would ease congestion, making the traffic flow smooth. I hope the Traffic Department will look into the suggestion.

Questions over dust storms
Dear Sir,
The frequency of dust storms seems to have increased in Qatar and other Gulf countries this season. This is a disturbing trend. For the last several years, Qatar used to witness a maximum of one or two dust storms during the summer. But this year both the number and intensity of dust storms have increased.
Do the weather experts have any explanation for the phenomenon? Is it a sign of a changing weather pattern or a temporary development?
