A three-day workshop organised by Justice Ministry’s Centre for Legal and Judicial Studies in association with the US Department of Justice is discussing issues concerning electronic crimes.
Participants are discussing various aspects of cyber, banking and financial transaction crimes at the workshop titled ‘Crimes and Evidence’ that started here on Monday.
Stressing the importance of the workshop, the Centre for Legal and Judicial Studies director Maryam Yusuf Arab said, “The world has become a global village with innovative information technology. Combating e-crimes is vital since banking and financial transactions are universally done via the Internet; payments are done electronically.”
Qatar has taken steps to combat cyber-crime vide Law 14 of 2014 which comprehensively covers all electronic crimes carried out by criminals using fraudulent cards, e-mails and intellectual property rights infringements. It lays down procedures for investigation, international co-operation, mutual legal assistance and extradition, she said.
“The workshop is being held in co-operation with the US Department of Justice to benefit from their expertise in prevention of crime and criminal justice to focus on legal topics and issues of cyber-crimes,” Maryam said.
The Centre for Legal and Judicial Studies seeks to formulate effective mechanisms to combat such crimes backed by laws that empower security agencies to collect information from computers through the Internet as forensic evidence, she said.
This workshop reflects the co-operation between the Centre and US Justice Department’s training and development of public prosecution systems which started last year with a workshop on financial crimes, she said and added, it was the first of its kind in the Middle East and a great success.
