Former India captain Rahul Dravid has agreed to coach the India A and India U-19 teams, announced Indian cricket board secretary Anurag Thakur yesterday.
He becomes the latest member of the 'Fab Four' to become a part of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in a way. Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman have already been inducted into the Indian cricket board's advisory committee and the trio held their first meeting at the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) along with BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya yesterday.
"Rahul Dravid has agreed to coach the India A and India U-19 teams in the future," said Thakur, who was addressing the media in a press conference after the advisory committee meeting.
Dravid will begin his role with a home series in July featuring India A, Australia A and South Africa A. He will subsequently accompany the under-19 team to the World Cup next year scheduled to be played in Bangladesh.
Thakur had said earlier that there was a role being made for Rahul Dravid. Reports suggested that Dravid was keen on a hands-on role rather than being part of the advisory committee. Dravid has been instrumental in the rise of many a young cricketer in the Indian Premier League with Rajasthan Royals.
The appointment is also significant because Bharat Arun, who was the U-19 coach, is now a part of the national team's support staff.
There is still no confirmation on the appointment of a new coach but Thakur said that an announcement will be made soon.
Ravi Shastri, the team director for the Bangladesh tour, was reported to be in consideration for a full time role but Shastri has said that he has not decided on anything and will discuss it with the board after finishing his present assignment.
"There is lot of speculation about his future but leave that to us. The time of speculation is over. The matter will be decided and this committee has been asked to give its recommendation, based on which future decisions will be taken," Thakur said.
"Till the time we don't make any changes, the current set-up will continue. We have not shortlisted any names but in some time we will have a few names and the advisory committee meeting will be held," he added.
