Galfar volunteers clean Ruwais beach
Around 30 volunteers from Galfar Al Misnad Engineering & Contracting Company took part in the cleaning of Al Ruwais beach  on June 19 under the patronage of the Ministry of Environment.
This is part of the Ministry’s ongoing national beach cleaning drive, which is supported by Al Shamal Municipality.
High-density plastic debris was cleared form the beach.  The amount of plastic debris accumulated in this small area is an indication of the seriousness of widespread littering on beaches and seas around  the region.
It is a known fact that plastic debris litters the oceans causing various types of hazards to the ecologically sensitive marine environment. Beach clean-ups, followed by awareness campaigns are the last line of defence to prevent debris from causing harm to the sea, marine life, coastal economies, and to prevent toxic chemical pollutants ending up in the diet through marine food.
Galfar executive director, Satish G Pillai expressed the company’s intention to support this noble cause by working together with Ministry for monthly cleaning of a 7-km stretch of west coast of Al Shamal, where significant amount of debris gets accumulated.
