Bangladesh yesterday urged Myanmar to send back a soldier of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) but the neighbouring country said it will take legal action against him for entering its territory illegally.
Bangladesh ambassador to Myanmar Sufiur Rahman met Myanmar’s foreign secretary and conveyed Dhaka’s request to send Nayek Abdur Razzaq back home, said a diplomatic source.
If Myanmar goes for legal measures, the return of Razzak will be delayed, the source added.
Bangladesh also lodged strong protest with Myanmar for publishing Razzaq’s photos in handcuffs.
The foreign ministry on Thursday summoned Myanmar ambassador in Dhaka Myo Myint Than and asked him to convey his government to immediately return Razzak, abducted on Wednesday.
On Wednesday, Myanmar’s Border Guard Police (BGP) opened fire on a BGB patrol boat in the Naaf river which was later described by Bangladesh as ‘misunderstanding’.
Another BGB man, Biplob Kumar, received bullet injury when the BGP opened fire on the BGB petrol boat in the Naf river in Cox’s Bazar.
Bangladesh while briefing the diplomat described the incident as most unfortunate and totally unwarranted and said such unprovoked firing by BGP is not acceptable.
