The Minnesota Twins pounded out 16 hits and overcame a shaky outing from Phil Hughes in a 9-5 win over the Detroit Tigers in Saturday’s Major League Baseball. Hughes lasted just five innings, allowing four runs on eight hits but got the win anyway thanks to a pair of big offensive innings early in the game. The Twins scored three runs in the second inning to grab the early lead before a four-run third gave them a 7-0 lead.

Marlins 14, Reds 3
The Miami Marlins rallied for five runs in the fifth inning and then scored eight more in the seventh to rout the Cincinnati Reds 14-3.
Marlins’ All-Star second baseman Dee Gordon left the game in the seventh inning with a dislocated left thumb. Gordon, who went 3-for-4 and is hitting .338 this season, was hurt while diving headfirst on his infield single.

Rays 3, Astros 0
Jake Odorizzi outdueled Houston Astros ace Dallas Keuchel to lead the Tampa Bay Rays to a 3-0 victory. Odorizzi, out since June 5 with an oblique injury, held the Astros to two hits in 5-2/3 scoreless innings before the Rays’ bullpen produced 3-1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Tampa’s win could be offset by a hamstring injury to shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, who left the game in the second inning. The severity of his injury was unknown.

White Sox 5, Cubs 1
Chris Sale threw a shutout through six innings while Tyler Saladino had an RBI triple in the first inning as the Chicago White Sox handed the crosstown rival Cubs a 5-1 loss.
Sale (8-4) was hardly challenged during his seven-plus innings. He allowed six hits and a walk while striking out 10. The Cubs’ lone run came in the seventh inning on a pinch-RBI double from Jonathan Herrera.

Mets 4, Diamondbacks 2
Right-handed pitcher Matt Harvey threw seven strong innings and hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning for a 4-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Harvey (8-6) battled through the first five innings before finding a groove after his first big-league homer.  He allowed two runs on five hits and four walks while striking out nine and throwing 71 of 109 pitches for strikes.

Blue Jays 6, Royals 2
Designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion and third baseman Danny Valencia hit home runs as the Toronto Blue Jays clubbed the Kansas City Royals 6-2. Encarnacion hit a home run in the fourth off Royals right-hander Chris Young while Valencia hit a three-run blast in the ninth off Royals rookie left-hander Brandon Finnegan.

Rockies 3, Braves 2
Carlos Gonzalez blooped a single with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth to give the Colorado Rockies a 3-2 win  over the Atlanta Braves.

A’s 5, Indians 4
The Oakland A’s scored three runs in the eighth inning and held on to beat the Cleveland Indians 5-4. Cleveland cut the deficit to 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run home run by first baseman Carlos Santana before A’s right-hander Tyler Clippard got the last four outs to pick up his 17th save.

Nationals 7, Orioles 4
Danny Espinosa hit a three-run homer as a part of a four-run sixth inning that helped the Washington Nationals to a 7-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. Washington’s Jordan Zimmermann (8-5) took the win despite struggling through five innings. Four relievers shut down the Orioles in the final four innings with closer Drew Storen recording his 26th save.

Red Sox 5, Yankees 3
Hanley Ramirez’s two-run blast in the fourth inning ignited the Boston Red Sox offense in a 5-3 victory over the New York Yankees.
Left-handed rookie Eduardo Rodriguez (5-2) pitched well in his debut outing against the Yankees, limiting them to two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out two in 6-1/3 innings.

Padres 6, Rangers 5
San Diego third baseman Yangervis Solarte’s two-run homer capped a three-run ninth inning as the Padres rallied for a 6-5 victory over Texas.  Center fielder Melvin Upton Jr.’s RBI single to left against Texas closer Shawn Tolleson made it a one-run game before Solarte launched his two-run homer.

Mariners 5, Angels 0
Seattle right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma rebounded from a shaky start to throw eight shutout innings and lead the Mariners to a 5-0 win over the Los Angeles Angels.
Iwakuma allowed the first three batters of the game to reach base but gave up just one hit the rest of the way, finishing with three hits and two walks while striking out six.
Mark Trumbo drove in two runs and right fielder Nelson Cruz went 3-for-3. Kyle Seager had two hits and scored twice.

Pirates 6, Cardinals 5 (14 innings)
Andrew McCutchen’s two-run homer in the bottom of the 14th inning gave the Pittsburgh Pirates a thrilling 6-5 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. It was McCutchen’s 12th home run of the season and fifth career walk-off shot.

Brewers 7, Dodgers 1
Rookie Taylor Jungmann threw a three-hitter, while center fielder Carlos Gomez drove in five runs to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 7-1 rout of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Giants 8, Phillies 5

Matt Duffy highlighted a five-run sixth inning with a two-run triple for his third hit of the game to lead the San Francisco Giants to an 8-5 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.
