Roger Federer may have been unable to claim an eighth men’s singles crown on the Wimbledon centre court yesterday, but there was some hope left that a blow could still be struck for the thirtysomething brigade, or even the fortysomething brigade.
And the mixed doubles pairing of Switzerland's Martina Hingis and Leander Paes didn't disappoint. Fresh from lifting the women’s doubles title in tandem with Sania Mirza on Saturday, the evergreen Hingis returned to the scene of victory to claim more silverware alongside Indian doubles specialist Paes. The Swiss Miss of yore is 34 now—was it really 18 summers ago that she won the ladies’ singles title at Wimbledon?—while Paes, who has won this title three times, is still going strong at 42.
The Indo-Swiss pairing took just 40 minutes to decimate the Hungarian-Austrian tandem of Timea Babos and Alexander Peya 6-1, 6-1 in the mixed doubles to lift the title on centre court yesterday.
Paes and Hingis had also won the Australian Open mixed doubles title in January. It was 42-year-old Paes’s eighth Grand Slam mixed title while it was the third one for Swiss legend Hingis.
There was more good news for India when the country's junior player Sumit Nagal etched his name in the history books by winning the Wimbledon boys' doubles title with Vietnamese partner Nam Hoang Ly earlier in the day.
The 17-year-old Nagal and Ly, seeded eighth, defeated American-Japanese fourth seeds Reilly Opelka and Akira Santillan 7-6(4), 6-4 in the final.
Both pairs broke each other once to push the first set to a tie-breaker where Nagal and Ly proved a tad bit better to win the set and take the lead.
The eighth seeds were offered only one breakpoint opportunity in the second set which they grabbed with open hands to get the break of serve and win the set and the match.
