La Pierre St Martin, France: Cyclist Ivan Basso is to undergo surgery in Milan today just days after being diagnosed with testicular cancer, his team Tinkoff-Saxo said yesterday.
“Basso will undergo surgery in order to clarify the nature of the problem and reach its resolution,” an online statement said.
“The intervention will be performed by Professor Francesco Montorsi, Director of the Urology Surgery Unit at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, and his team.”
The 37-year-old Italian rider went to hospital on Sunday after feeling pain following a minor crash on stage five of the ongoing Tour de France and was diagnosed on Monday. He immediately withdrew from the tour and returned to Italy.
Basso, who won the Giro d’Italia in 2006 and 2010, told Italian broadcaster RAI: “The only possible way in such a situation is confidence and optimism.
“The shock was very great but I always try to fight back in difficult situations and it’s like that now. And I know that I have fantastic people with me.”
