Cyclone Komen hit Bangladesh early yesterday, killing four people, officials said.
The storm came ashore at Chittagong on the southeast coast, said Arif Hossain, an officer of the Bangladesh
Meteorological Department.
Before it made landfall, the cyclone swept Saint Martin’s Island in the far south, killing four people and forcing the evacuation of thousands in different places along the coast, the met office said.
The four victims were killed in separate incidents by trees falling on their houses.
At least 150 fishermen’s houses were also destroyed.
The rainy monsoon hits Bangladesh every year from around June to October, with typhoons most common from August onwards.
The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) suspended operation of vessels on the waterways throughout the country.
