Make water while the humidity is high. That is the message an Indian community activist has to share with the residents of Qatar.
As the summer sun is burning hot, the accompanying humidity is all the more taxing for the residents of the country. It is very common in this part of the world for July, August and even September to be very humid. Nowadays several residents feel that the humidity levels are so high that they find it very uncomfortable to venture out of their houses.
Seenu Pillai, an Indian engineer, said he has found a novel method of making good use of the high humidity. He connects his air-conditioners at home to plastic bottles and collects all the condensate water discharged by them.
Speaking to Gulf Times, Pillai said: “This week, one split air-conditioner unit gave around 40 litres of condensate water in 8 hours. Two of them gave 80 litres. This clean water is used to wash clothes and watering plants and for several other purposes.”
He continued: “Sustainability starts at home. This is a good example of sustainability. If everyone engages in such practices, the water wastage can be reduced. This can also lead to energy conservation and sustainability in the long run as environment is everyone’s responsibility.” ”
The Indian expatriate pointed out that he has plans to extend the idea at several other places in Doha.
Pillai who is one of the office-bearers of the Indian Cultural Centre (ICC), feels that ICC was one of the places where this practice can be implemented.
“We have planted several trees at the ICC premises. If we collect the condensate water from the air-conditioners at ICC, it must be more than sufficient to water  all the plants,” added Pillai.
