Renowned dancer Prachee Shah gave a sterling Kathak performance at the Katara Drama Theatre on Wednesday.
Having set a Guinness World Record for ‘93 kathak spins in one minute’ Prachee Shah is a highly acclaimed Kathak dancer of the Jaipur Gharana. Shah has given over 200 performances in India and abroad.
Kathak is one of the eight original forms of Indian classical dance, and traces its origins to the nomadic bards of ancient northern India.
She is also a very popular face on Indian television, having acted in shows like Kyunki Saas Bhi Khabi Bahu Thi… and in movies like Haunted 3D.
At Katara, she was accompanied by a team of musicians on vocals, tabla and sarangi.
According to Shah, Kathak is not just a dance form, but also a medium to communicate with the divine.
Dignitaries including the Indian ambassador Sanjiv Arora and the General Manager of Katara Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim al-Sulaiti attended the show, which was held in collaboration with the Indian embassy.
The event was staged at Katara to mark the 69th Independence Day of India, which falls on August 15.
The initiative was in keeping with Katara’s role in enriching the cultural and artistic scene in Qatar and shedding light on diverse international cultures, according to a statement.
As part of India’s 69th Independence Day celebrations, Shah performed at a special cultural evening at the Birla Public School Auditorium yesterday.
