New-generation actors sweep film awards in Kerala

New-generation actors Nivin Pauly, Nazriya Nazeem and Sudev Nair walked away with top honours at the Kerala state film awards announced here yesterday.
Nazriya who quit acting after her marriage with Fahadh Faazil last year was adjudged the best actor (female) by the jury headed by renowned screenwriter John Paul for her performance in Om Shanti Oshana and Bangalore Days-both runaway hits.
Emerging ‘superstar’ Nivin Pauly (Bangalore Days, 1983) whose recent films were making waves among the youngsters shared the best actor award with newcomer Sudev Nair (My Life Partner).
The three young actors said the award, for which veterans like Mammootty, Manju Warrier and Lal were in the race, came as a surprise for them. Nazriya also hinted at the possibility of her returning to acting.
“This will encourage me to do more serious films,” Pauly said.
“I’m happy that people still remember me,” said Nazriya. “I didn’t expect this award”.
Ottal, directed by Jayaraj which received the national award for the best environmental film and best-adapted screenplay, was adjudged the best film and MV Padma Kumar’s My Life Partner the second best film.
Sanal Kumar Sasidharan bagged the award for the best filmmaker for his directorial debut Oralpokkam, the first film to be produced through online crowdfunding.
Anoop Menon is the best male character actor (1983, Vikramadithyan) while Sethulakshmi (How Old Are You) won the award in the female category.
Advaith (Ankuram) and Hanna Fathima (Randu Penkuttikal) won the best child artiste awards in the male and female categories respectively.
Abrid Shine (1983) is the best debut director.
Anjali Menon’s hit film Bangalore Days also won her the award for the best screenplay.
K J Yesudas won the 27th state award for the best singer for the song Aditya Kiranangal Anjanam Ezhuthiya.. in White Boys, which also won Ramesh Narayanan the award for the best composer.
Shreya Ghoshal (Vijanathayil Paathi Vazhiyil in How Old Are You) is the best female singer for a third time.
OS Unnikrishnan’s Ithra Pakalinodu Othucherna.. in Lasagu won him the award for the best lyricist.
Cinema Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan announced the awards in the presence of the jury members. The awards carry cash prizes ranging from Rs50,000 to Rs200,000.
