Qatar Airways’ Al Darb Qatarisation Programme has celebrated the third year of its Summer Internship Programme, with more than 50 summer interns completing their internships.
“The Qatar Airways Summer Internship Programme gives national university students the opportunity to receive professional training and experience the aviation industry with one of the world’s fastest growing airlines,” the airline said in a statement yesterday.
Nabeela Fakhri, Qatar Airways senior vice-president (human resources employee services), said: “Now in its third year, the Qatar Airways Summer Internship Programme gives the highest performing students further rewards for their hard work by unlocking more opportunities to work with Qatar Airways outstations and attend specialist training with our strategic partners.”
Illustrating the opportunities available as part of the Al Darb Summer Internship Programme, two students were given a chance to gain experience and further their learning by working with Qatar Airways’ partners Pratt & Whitney in the UK and Airbus in France.
Summer internships for the Qatar Airways Al Darb Qatarisation students started in June at the Pratt & Whitney offices in East Hartford, UK, for two weeks’ worth of training and ended in Toulouse at the Airbus headquarters for additional A350 training.
Engineering students Khalid al-Hajaj and Mohamed Janahi attended the training and are some of the first Qatar Airways employees to see the new Pratt & Whitney engine. In addition to the theory tuition they received, the students had a chance to visit the customer training centre and airplane museum.
Al-Hajaj and Janahi were selected for the assignment based on their strong performance during last year’s programme.
The Summer Internship Programme, which is part of the Al Darb Qatarisation Programme at Qatar Airways, aims to help young Qataris reach their full potential through the country’s national airline.
Interns participating in the programme have the chance to work in a variety of departments within Qatar Airways in Doha and abroad. Locally, students may work at Oryx Rotana, Hamad International Airport or in one of several divisions within the airline, including capital projects, commercial, finance, technical, engineering and customer experience.
Additionally, a number of interns are selected to spend the summer at one of Qatar Airways’ outstations in Europe, Asia or North America, or learn industry best practices with one of the airline’s strategic partners.
Participants in the Summer Internship Programme are eligible to receive course credit from their university. At present, seven local and international universities award class credit to students who complete an internship with the airline. These are Virginia Commonwealth University, Texas A&M, Carnegie Mellon, Qatar University, Stenden University, University of Colorado (US) and Leeds Beckett University (UK).
The airline is currently in talks with three other universities in the UK – Cardiff University, University of Huddersfield and Nottingham Trent University – to reach similar arrangements.
