Ministry cancels discount licences of five stores

The Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC) has cancelled the discount licences of five stores following an inspection campaign launched in a number of malls and stores, the MEC said in a statement.
The MEC said the five outlets were slapped with a QR5,000 fine each, and were prohibited to provide discounts for the remaining period of their licenses after violating the provisions of the ministerial decree No. 5 for the year 1984 on sale via public cost reductions (discounts).
Before making any purchases, the MEC advised consumers to check the price of the item before and during the discount duration and to check the price list showing the price of the item before the discount and the endorsed discount rate.
All consumers have the right to receive a detailed invoice, including the pre-discount and the post-discount prices, the ministry said.
All outlets granted discount licenses have been urged to abide by offering real discounts “and not to indulge in fraudulent practices or other actions that could be deemed harmful to consumers’ rights.”
The MEC stressed that it will intensify its campaigns to ensure stricter control over the local market. It warned violators that it will be strict with them and will refer them to the concerned authorities for proper penalties.
Consumers are urged to report any violations using the following channels: Hotline, 16001; email, info@mec.gov.qa; and (Twitter) @MEC_Qatar.
