Qatar Primary Materials Company’s gabbro strockpile at Mesaieed. QPMC said it will supply gabbro and limestone to both the private and government sectors to ensure the stability of prices of primary infrastructure materials in the local market.

Qatar Primary Materials Company (QPMC) has increased its gabbro berth terminal capacity across the country to 58mn tonnes per year (tpy) even as QPMC began selling quality primary materials to the public and private sectors.
QPMC yesterday said it had commenced gabbro sale from the company’s stockpiles and storage areas in Mesaieed and Lusail, to contractors.
QPMC said it will supply gabbro and limestone, to both the private and government sectors to ensure the stability of prices of primary infrastructure materials in the local market and provide the required quantities to all concerned as part of its mission to help the country’s infrastructure development. The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) and QPMC had recently signed a framework agreement under which the latter will supply Ashghal with 91mn tonnes of gabbro and limestone for the next five years.
The gabbro berth terminal at Mesaieed Port will enhance the capacity to handle bulk materials, QPMC said. The facility will have an unloading capacity of 34mn tonnes a year (by 2016) through the “conveyor stacker” system.
Recently, QPMC announced the launch and full operation of a second jetty at Lusail. The company’s second and newly added jetty is located in Lusail, where many construction projects are being implemented.
QPMC’s jetty will supply nearly 3mn tonnes of construction material a year to support all construction work in the new city. Its former capacity was about 500 tonnes per hour. With the recent expansion, the handling and unloading capacity of the port has gone up to about 1,000 tonnes an hour, and it is aimed to reach a discharge capacity of 3mn tonnes per year.
The company also announced the allocation of 250,000sq m of temporary unloading and storage area near the Lusail Jetty to receive and store the next set of gabbro loads to Qatar from September 1.
QPMC has set up two floating jetties in Ras Laffan for the supply of primary materials.
The jetties consist of two floating docks each that accommodate four barges with an extra dock that can accommodate an extra marpol jetty (totalling up to five barges), which has a handling capacity of 12,000 tonnes each.
The port operates round the clock and boasts of a gabbro storage area of 1,800,000 metres.
QPMC’s conveyor belt facility in Mesaieed is one of the largest in the Middle East and the first of its kind in the region.
Conveyor belts, expected to be completed this year, will cover up to 5km from the port to the storage area. These will be operating round the clock to deliver gabbro across Qatar.
Conveyor belts will also be set up in Mesaieed in the first quarter of 2016, QPMC said. The unloading and storage facility for the project in Mesaieed has an area of 1,000,000sq m.
QPMC’s modern cement silo (circular structure for storing bulk materials), once operational during the first quarter of 2016, will be able to load 1,000 tonnes of cement an hour and designed to discharge 1.8mn tonnes of cement a year into the 12 silos, with a total storage capacity of 60,000 cu m.
