Camel racing season starts today

QNA/Doha

Qatar’s new camel racing season 2015-16 starts today at the Al Shahaniya racing track, north of Doha.
Speaking ahead of the new season, Camel Racing Organizing Committee Chairman HE Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Faisal al-Thani said, “The form and content of the 2015-16 will be different and interesting compared with the past seasons.
“The development of camel racing at Al Shahaniya is the result of the support and guidance of HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani. Qatar occupies a prominent position in camel races held here as well as the GCC and Arab competitions.”
Our primary aim is to fulfil the aspirations of Qatari citizens for whom the traditional sport of camel racing is very dear. To this objective we have decided to increase the prizemoney and prizes in kind for local races this season, he said.
The chairman lauded the support and participation of hybrid camel owners in Qatar and the GCC states at Al Shahaniya which adds value to the events by spurring the competition levels for camel racing fans.
A new addition this year is the installation of four giant screens that will show live broadcasts of the races as well as previews for the benefit of fans who will be able to follow the races from the comfort of their vehicles, he added.
Professional Camel racing started in Qatar in 1972.
