The Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) yesterday announced the completion of a project to build nine water wells in Chad to provide potable water for the financially challenged community there.
QRCS carried out the QR99,225 project in partnership with Chad’s Albir Charitable Association, under an agreement signed in 2012.
The nine fenced surface water wells, annexed with cattle troughs, are located in towns and districts located between 6 to 85km from the town of Moussoro, which is 294km from Chad’s capital N’Djamena.
The wells are deep and lined with high-quality bricks. Licensed contractors executed the project, QRCS said.
Officials and local community attended the opening ceremony. Mayor of Moussoro Issa Abdel-Rahman thanked QRCS on behalf of the government of Chad.
Albir Charitable Association chairman Youssef Mohamed Abbas said: “The people of Chad face water crisis even in major cities like N’Djamena and Abeche. Many towns and areas have no water wells. Some towns are located 10km or more from the nearest water well.”
He urged the QRCS to continue to support water projects in the country in order to face droughts and water shortages, save many poor people searching for water, and reduce serious water-borne diseases such as cholera.
