South Korea’s defence minister yesterday called for expanded defence co-operation with the Philippines amid tensions over who controls parts of the South China Sea.
Defence Minister Han Min-Koo said South Korea had “accumulated extensive experience in terms of defence capability” that it can share with “friendly” neighbours such as the Philippines.
“With the Philippines, we are already conducting co-operation in many areas,” he told reporters after meeting his Philippine counterpart Defence Secretary Voltaire Gazmin.
“I believe that all these areas can be expanded even further.” Han added that South Korea, one of the Philippines’ major arms suppliers, was prepared to extend more military assistance to Manila if necessary.
“Korea will support to the best of our ability, should an issue arise that is in need of our attention,” he said, noting that 90% of its petroleum trade and 30% of overall trade goes through the South China Sea.
China’s claims to the South China Sea overlap in part with territories claimed by the Philippines and several other South-East Asian nations.
