The inaugural Pakistan Super League (PSL), a franchise-based T20 tournament which will be held here in Doha, will feature prominent players like Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo.
Najam Sethi, head of PCB Executive committee, had earlier said that they were looking to rope in the West Indian star but it was only yesterday that the agency that managed Gayle confirmed that the player had signed the pre-draft agreement.
Apart from these three, other T20 specialists like Darren Sammy, Sunil Narine and former England batsman Owais Shah will be part of pool of players available for the PSL draft.
“Obviously top guns like Gayle are stars who attract fans,” Najam Sethi, head of PCB Executive committee, was quoted as saying by a cricket website. “They lend commercial value, showbiz glitz and tournament credibility. They are also sources of inspiration and emulation for our budding players.”
Gayle who has recently undergone a back surgery is expected to recover by December which gives him ample time to take part in the PSL and will also help him get his match fitness ahead of the World T20 in India that begins a month later.
The PSL is scheduled to take place from February 4 to 24, at the Asian Town stadium in Doha, and will have five teams - Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta, and Islamabad playing for a prize money of $1 million. There will be a total of 24 matches in the competition.
This will be the first major cricket tournament hosted by Doha. The original venue for the event was UAE but they had to look for an alternate venue after being told by the Emirates Cricket Board that it was hosting the Masters Champions league (Twenty20 tournament featuring retired cricketers) on the same dates.
Last week, the PCB had roped in former captains Ramiz Raja and Wasim Akram as ambassadors for the first season. Both of them had been tied with the Masters Champions League, but Akram was quoted as saying, “I’m up for leaving anything for Pakistan cricket. I don’t want to earn money by playing cricket but instead want to give something back to my nation. We signed with MCL and had to work for them, but my priority is to help our country’s cause.”
The logo of the PSL will be revealed in a ceremony on September 20, but the PCB said finding stakeholders to bid for the franchises and the broadcast rights is still a work in progress.

Saying goodbye is never easy, especially when you are saying farewell to those that have left a positive impression. That was the case earlier this month when Canada hosted Mexico in a friendly at BC Place stadium in Vancouver.
