Qatar’s Mishel Turkey’s campaign at the 2015 WPA World 9-Ball Championship came to an abrupt end when he was beaten by veteran Filipino Dennis Orcollo 11-1 in the round of 64 at the Al Arabi Sports Hall yesterday.
The 19-year-old Qatari had beaten 2007 world champion Daryl Peach a day before to reach the knockouts but was thoroughly outdone by the 36-year-old Orcollo.
“Pressure showed on Mishel but that’s understandable considering he is a local boy,” the 2011 World 8-Ball champion said after his win. “He made a mistake in the second rack itself. He did try to shut me out but I was able to pull out and then I was able to build a lead.”
Orcollo said he enjoyed playing here in Qatar owing to the big Filipino community here. “I have been coming here since 2008. The local support from the Filipinos is a big factor here.”
Talking about his chances at the tournament, he said, “We are moving toward the business end and I hope to do well and reach the finals.”
Another promising campaign that came to an end was that of Saudi Arabia’s Abdulrahman al-Amar. The 27-year-old had outfoxed world number 12 Johan Chua of Philippines 9-7 for a spot in the knockouts. It was only the second time ever that a player from Saudi Arabia had advanced to the Final 64. Yesterday, however, he came up short against Singapore’s Toh Lian Han 8-11.
