Mahbubeh Mohabatolla Akhlaghi made a winning return to women’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions at the Qatar Shooting and Archery Association Cup at Losail Shooting Complex yesterday. Akhlaghi, who took a break away from the 50m Rifle 3 Positions for the last four years to concentrate on other events, scored 438.8 points to claim the gold medal defeating Aisha Yousef al-Suwaidi (435) and Aisha Ibrahim al-Mutawa (424.1) in the final.
“I had some health issues that is the reason I took a break from 50m Rifle 3 Positions, but I was taking part in the other shooting events,” said Akhlaghi, who took gold in the same event in the Cairo 2007 Arab Games. Akhlaghi, who won the 50m Rifle Prone Women silver medal on Friday, said her performance will keep her in the right frame of mind for the upcoming Asian Championships in Kuwait, which will serve as one of the qualifying tournaments for the 2016 Olympics Games in Rio de Janeiro.
“The next big event for us and a big challenge is to the bag the Olympic quota at the Asian Championships,” said Akhlaghi, who trailed the other two podium winners in the qualifying rounds but covered lot of ground to triumph in the final rounds. Earlier on Friday, Bahia al-Hamad won the gold medal in the women’s 50m rifle event. Al Hamad sparkled in all attempts to secure the yellow metal, ahead of Akhlaqi who clinched silver while the bronze went to Aisha al-Motawa.
In the junior girls’ 50m rifle event, Noora al-Mohannadi grabbed the gold medal as Shahad Darwish took the silver and the bronze went to Aisha al-Suwaidi.
