Transit traveller attempting to smuggle gold nabbed at HIA

Doha

The General Authority of Customs (GAC) has foiled an attempt to smuggle 84 pieces of gold, weighing a total of six kg, with a transit traveller at Hamad International Airport (HIA).

The traveller from another GCC country was spotted with some pieces of gold in his bag but he told the GAC officer that he is taking them to another country as transit.

Accordingly, the pieces were registered as transit and the traveller given a due statement. However, when the traveller went through the procedures to resume his trip, the officer suspected his behaviour and asked that he should be searched thoroughly.

When the man was searched, a bag full of gold pieces was found under his belly. Gold pieces were also found wrapped around his legs and concealed. In all, the 84 pieces weighed 6kg with a value exceeding QR600,000.

Subsequently, the normal legal procedures were taken and the traveller handed over to the security entities concerned and the gold seized by GAC.
