World Championship to showcase 250 top boxers in Doha

Qatar is all set to host top names from the boxing fraternity at the AIBA World Boxing Championship from October 1 to 15 here in Doha.
Around 250 boxers representing 70 nations will figure in the event to be held for the first time in the Middle East. Some boxers booked their places by winning their continental qualification rounds.
Thirty-one boxers from eight Arab nations will compete in the tournament. Morocco (8), Algeria (7), Qatar (6), Egypt (4) Jordan (2), Syria (2), and one each from Iraq and Tunisia.
Thirty boxers have gained their qualification quotas to AIBA World Boxing Championships Doha 2015 through Baku 2015 European Games.
AIBA president Dr Ching-Kuo Wu said, “AIBA World Boxing Championship is the most anticipated event of the world boxing calendar. Boxers will compete for a chance to qualify to Rio 2016 and demonstrate the utmost appeal of our sport before hundreds of thousands of TV viewers and fans from all over the world.”
Qatar Boxing Federation (QBF) president and AIBA World Boxing Championship executive director Yousuf Ali al-Kazim said Doha is prepared to stage a memorable event at Ali bin Hamad al-Attiyah Arena in Doha.
Global boxing media, officials and fans are attending the event that will be broadcast to more than 60 countries around the world through live TV and social media feeds.
The mascot of the championship is a fox named Majed which means noble in Arabic language. The mascot represents the characteristics of being friendly, welcoming, active and respecting others. AIBA has appointed Adam Kusior as the supervisor of the championship. The opening ceremony will be held October 5.
