Garment union head receives German prize

Amirul Haque Amin, the head of Bangladesh’s National Textile Workers Union, yesterday received the Nuremburger Human Rights Prize for 2015 for his efforts to make textile factories safer in his home country.
The prize, which is worth 15,000 euros ($16,795), was presented by Nuremburg Mayor Ulrich Maly at the city’s opera house to the 54-year-old Amin for his work to improve extremely poor working conditions at the many textile factories in Bangladesh.
Two years ago, more than 1,000 workers died in a factory collapse in the South Asian country.
German Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel, speaking at the award ceremony, called on Germans to be conscious of such conditions when making purchases. Those who continue to buy T-shirts for 4 euros and jackets for 20 euros also continue to support poor working conditions or South Asia’s workers, he said.
