Expat forum welcomes Nepal’s new constitution

USHERING IN A NEW ERA: The guests at the programme celebrated Nepal’s new consitution by cutting  a ceremonial cake.

Nepal President Ram Baran Yadav officially promulgated the constitution of Nepal last week amidst a grand ceremony in the Constituent Assembly (CA) in Kathmandu. The Nepalese people at home and abroad celebrated the historic moment with cultural celebrations and fireworks. The constitution was formed after a long wait since 2006.
Qatar-based Nepalese expats too participated in various programmes here to celebrate the official promulgation of the constitution. The Chitwan Youth Society (CYS) organised a programme recently to mark the great day in the history of the nation. The programme, presided over by CYS chairman Bhumiraj Karki, saw the participation of community leaders and representatives of various Nepalese organisations.  More than 200 Nepalese took part in the celebrations.
The welcome programme was held in Mazza restaurant. The event kicked off with the national anthem and participants lighted candles in the newly federalised map of the country. Participants said they now expected the transitional phase to  end and the job market to be expand in their home country. CYS vice-chairman Samir Khatri said the country will soon enter into a phase of economic growth and development. Community leader Karim Baks Miya said the dream of 60 years was fulfilled, and the statute has incorporated rights of every citizens of the country.
CYS chairman Bhumi Raj Karki congratulated all Nepalese, both in Nepal and abroad. Ananta Timilsina, general secretary of Nepal Film Technicians’ Association (NFTA), who is in Qatar for a forthcoming award function, congratulated all Nepalese who were sharing a historical moment.
Dhan Bahadur Pariyar, general-secretary, Nepali United Society, expressed caution with optimism. He said, “The statute has flaws and limitations, yet this is my constitution, and I welcome it.” Another expat Biswo Thapa said he now expected frequent political strikes to end.      
The programme was hosted by Bijaya Raj Adhikari.  The whole event together with dinner party was sponsored by Pigeon Engineering Trading and Contracting Company.
The new constitution of Nepal has 35 parts, 305 articles and nine annexes, endorsed by 507 votes in the 598-member CA. The constitution has now institutionalised republicanism, federalism, secularism and inclusive participation in the country.
