Indrani responding to treatment, says hospital

Indrani Mukerjea: in hospital

Indrani Mukerjea, one of the three people accused in the Sheena Bora murder case who was admitted to a Mumbai hospital in an unconscious state on Friday, is responding to treatment, a top official said yesterday.
Dean of Sir J J Hospital, T P Lahane, said Mukerjea was now in a semi-conscious state, and may fully recover in three days.
“She is responding to voice commands. She asked for water once but remains in a semi-conscious state. She is also on ventilator to help her breathe. We are waiting for the urine report to determine what could be the exact cause of her present condition,” Lahane told reporters here.
Mukerjea was rushed to the J J Hospital from jail after she complained of uneasiness and breathing difficulties around 2pm on Friday.
On Friday night, her condition was described as serious.
“We think that she consumed some tablets... we are treating her on that basis,” Lahane said.
Senior home department official Satvir Singh said Lahane was prescribed two pills for epileptic problems, one each in the morning and evening, under the supervision of the jail authorities.
However, she apparently hoarded the tablets and took them all at once on Friday leading to her present condition, Singh said, adding the matter would be probed.
There were rumours that she tried to commit suicide but neither the hospital nor jail officials were willing to comment.
Though the motives for her action are a matter of speculation, Mukerjea was under stress after her 82-year-old mother Durga Rani Bora died on Thursday in Guwahati.
Mukerjea was arrested on August 25 for her role in the murder of Sheena Bora, her daughter from a previous marriage, in April 2012.
Along with Mukerjea, her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna and her former driver Shyamvar Rai were also arrested.
The sensational case was initially handled by the Mumbai police under the supervision of then police commissioner Rakesh Maria and later transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation by the Maharashtra government.
The CBI lodged a separate case against the three late last month.
Since September 7, Mukerjea, Khanna and Rai have been lodged in judicial custody.
