Kite thread kills 5-year-old boy in Chennai
In a tragic incident, a five-year-old boy bled to death when a kite thread slit his throat while he was riding pillion on his father’s scooter on the Perambur flyover in Chennai last week.
The dangling kite threads were reportedly polished with glass shards colloquially called manja that caused Ajay’s death. Police detained two teenagers who had flown the kites and later raided their homes to confiscate manja rolls and other equipment.
Tragically the next day, Ajay’s mother tried to commit suicide by overdosing on tablets. She was put on life support at a city hospital.
Kite flying continues to be a popular sport despite a state government ban imposed a decade ago when three men died similarly in Chennai. The sport is allowed only on open grounds and in rural areas and manja threads are also illegal.
