Assembly adjourned amid ruckus in Kashmir

Opposition members scuffle in the Kashmir assembly yesterday.

The Jammu and Kashmir assembly was adjourned for the day yesterday following ruckus by the opposition over relief to flood victims. One marshal of the chamber was injured. After the day’s proceedings started, legislators of the opposition National Conference and Congress stood at their seats shouting slogans against the government, alleging it had failed to provide relief to families hit by the September 2015 floods. “Do not exploit flood victims,” read banners displayed by the Congress legislators. The protesting legislators finally came near the speaker’s podium and clashed with the security staff. Some protesting lawmakers also flung papers towards the speaker’s chair. Speaker Kavinder Gupta adjourned the house for 15 minutes.
