Qatar has significantly improved the working conditions of labourers, it was stressed during a recent meeting between Qatar Chamber (QC) and a delegation representing the International Organisation of Employers (IOE) in Doha.
QC vice-chairman Mohamed bin Tuwar said the main objective of the meeting was to highlight labourers’ living and working conditions in Qatar.
Senior IOE officials, including secretary general Linda Kromjong, deputy secretary-general Robert Santos and vice-president IOE Jorgen Ronnest, attended the meeting along with a number of Qatari businessmen.
Bin Tuwar stressed that the meeting was an opportunity to provide a better understanding to labour-related issues and the progress Qatar has achieved in this area.
“Qatar has a large number of labourers, amounting to 85% of the total population. They are working in all sectors and contributing to the sustainable development of the country,” he said, adding “Qatar is one of the leading countries that has significantly developed labourers’ conditions to the highest level.”
The QC vice-chairman appreciated the contributions of the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (MoLSA) and Qatar Central Bank regarding the wage protection system, which will be enforced from
November.
Dr Mohamed Ibrahim, QC economic expert, gave a presentation on doing business in Qatar and the chamber’s role in the business community and the private sector.
Ronnest, meanwhile, gave a brief of the organisation and urged companies to respect the laws of the country they operate in to create a better and safe environment for workers.
Saleh al-Shawi, director of legal affairs, MoLSA, said, “Qatar is committed to all international agreements and co-operates with all interested institutions for supporting labourers’ rights.”
In her remarks, Kromjong reviewed the IOE’s recommendations for guaranteeing workers’ rights.
QC also organised a meeting between HE the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs Dr Abdullah Saleh Mubarak al-Khulaifi and the delegation.
QC chairman Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim al-Thani was also present at the meeting.
“Qatar Chamber has been our partner in these achievements,” the minister noted.
The delegation visited a number of worksites and labourers’ accommodation units. Hamad Bin Khalid Co, QDVC and Strabag Qatar were among the project sites visited.
“We wanted to visit more (sites) but what we have seen was really good,” Kromjong said.
