The Court of Appeal has reduced the fine imposed on a company, which was penalised after four workers had died while cleaning a septic tank, from QR200,000 to QR10,000, local Arabic daily Arrayah has reported.
Besides levying the fine, a lower court had also ordered the firm to pay blood money of QR200,000 to the kin of each deceased worker, a decision that the Court of Appeal has upheld.
In addition, the Court of Appeal has suspended the six-month prison terms, over a period of three years, awarded to three supervisers of the company for negligence.
The workers had suffocated to death on entering a septic tank to clean it and carry out some maintenance work. According to earlier reports, the company was charged with negligence for not taking precautionary safety and security measures at work sites and enforcing them.
