Fish availability has improved significantly in the local market as most fishing vessels are back in action in view of the improving weather.
Fishing activities have seen a particularly big jump over the past 48 hours, say industry insiders, adding that the shortage faced in recent weeks will be overcome soon.
The availability of King fish, for instance, has started improving and big stocks of this variety are already available in the market, it is learnt. This follows a lean period as the Ministry of Environment imposed a two-month ban on catching king fish in Qatari waters from August 15, in line with GCC-wide efforts to protect the species and maintain a reasonable stock through healthy breeding.
With the ban period coming to an end and the weather improving, the situation is expected to improve fast now, say the insiders.
King fish prices had shot up in recent times due to limited availability. Now, as large quantities are available for sale, prices have fallen to the QR15-16/kg level at the Central Market with large ones being sold for QR20 and above per kg. Suppliers say prices outside may be a little higher but are still quite affordable. Prices of the variety had increased to QR65-70/kg about a month ago.
Fishermen also expect an improvement in the tuna catch within a couple of days. Usually, the availability of tuna improves from the third week of October across the region, a veteran fisherman told Gulf Times.
However, the situation is yet to improve when it comes to another popular variety, Sheri. The fish, which is supposed to be one of the cheapest varieties, was being traded for QR20/kg yesterday. Suppliers, though, feel the price will fall in the coming days owing to an improved catch.
Traders who have been complaining of poor business for nearly two months now hope things will improve significantly now as the availability of different fish varieties sees a marked improvement.
