Call to bolster role of General Assembly

QNA
New York

Qatar has emphasised the importance of enhancing the role of the UN General Assembly, through the full exercise of powers entrusted to it and stop any interference or infringement on its jurisdiction or the Economic and Social Council’s mandate.
In a statement delivered before the UN General Assembly Sixth Committee (Legal) on the report of the Special Committee on the Charter of the UN and on the Strengthening of the Role of the Organisation, HE Sheikh Nasser bin Faisal al-Thani, member of Qatar’s delegation to the 70th session of the UN General Assembly, underlined that Qatar attached particular importance to the issue of international peaceful settlement of disputes stipulated in the charter of the UN, stemming from its commitment to the international law and the rule of law.
He pointed out to the unremitting efforts being exerted by Qatar over the past years to ease tensions in a number of countries that had seen conflicts, contributing to avoid and prevent serious wars and conflicts which could pose a threat to international peace and security in the region and the world.
In this context he said that the issue of peaceful settlement of disputes shall remain included in the committee agenda, according to its mandate, expressing support for the proposal submitted on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement, entitled “Peaceful Settlement of Disputes and its Impact on the Maintenance of Peace”, which coincides with the 70th anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter and being consistent with the Manila Declaration, urging UN member states to renew commitment to the peaceful settlement of disputes.
He praised the efforts of the special committee on the Charter of the UN on strengthening the role of the organisation, expressing Qatar’s support for all efforts aimed at activating its work.
He also expressed appreciation to the UN secretary-general, for his report of the special committee on the Charter of the UN and on the strengthening of the role of the organisation embedded in the document A 7033, voicing keenness to join the statement of the Non-Aligned Movement.
