The campus event brings the entire community in Qatar together to raise money and increase the understanding of breast cancer.
The Women’s Society and Development Club (WSDC) of Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar recently raised over QR110,000 at the fifth annual Breast Cancer Awareness Event.
The entire proceeds will go to Qatar Cancer Society for patient treatment and to fund education about breast cancer.
The campus event brings the entire community in Qatar together to raise money and increase the understanding of breast cancer, and is made possible by the support of some of Doha’s most popular businesses, according to a statement.
“Recent studies show that only 7% of Qataris are familiar with breast cancer symptoms and treatment. So, while our auction is a fun event with a lot of wonderful gifts for auction or raffle, the most important outcome is to get people talking about breast cancer,” said Noor al-Thani, who, along with Fatima al-Thani, serves as co-president of student group WSDC that organised the event.
The Georgetown University in Qatar atrium was festooned with decorations and the ubiquitous pink ribbon logo that represents the fight against breast cancer, as hundreds of students, faculty, staff and members of the Doha community visited over 50 booths to bid on donated items for the fundraising auction and raffle.
More than 10 new businesses joined this year’s offerings at the annual event. “This year, we added more healthy food stands, such as Raw Me, serving organic juices, The Pantry, featuring amazing organic nut butters, and the Vegetarian TreeHouse, as well as sweet tooth favourites Baskin Robbins, Dippingo and more,” explained Fatima.
A raffle of 10 iPads and five iPhones donated by Ooreddoo were some of the luxury items for visitors to bid for. The student organisers themselves collectively donated the highlight of the evening: an Hermès Apple Watch worth around QR5,000 from the recently revealed collection.
Other participating businesses included Magnolia Bakery, Healthy Living Qatar, Tim Hortons, several exclusive abaya tailors such as Darz and Fufi Design, Let’s Popcorn, Reem Favors, Cakerie, Blue Brush, Seib Insurance, Jo la Mode, and AlTseenat Cafe, a Souq Waqif eatery owned and managed by Qatari women.
