A Doha Criminal Court has been reviewing the case of a GCC national employed by a government department of illegally seizing 350 units of iPhone 6 valued at QR917,000, local Arabic daily Arrayah reported yesterday.
Official investigations revealed that the defendant had forged a correspondence attributing it to his office and addressed to a communication company demanding the supply of a number of iPhone 6 handsets, which he subsequently sold to some mobile phone shops in Doha.
The defendant admitted writing the letter and counterfeiting the signature of his boss and affixing the department’s official stamp, which was in his possession.
The matter came to light when an executive at a mobile shop became suspicious over the low price of the handsets compared to the original market price.
Accordingly, he contacted the supplier who confirmed his doubts and asked him to stop selling the products.
The official at the supplying company thereafter reported the matter to the authorities concerned and after a legal search of the defendant’s vehicle, the counterfeited correspondence was found, along with a sum of QR427,500 and another counterfeited order for new Samsung mobile phones, the daily added.
