A record 462 participants and 46 delegations are registered to compete at the FINA airweave Swimming World Cup in Doha this year with Olympians, World Champions and World Record Holders all adding to a star-studded line-up of talent.
On November 2nd and 3rd, the Hamad Aquatic Centre will play host to the world’s best as they battle for glory at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games qualification event.
Amongst those fans will be eager to see include South Africa’s leading duo, Cameron Van Der Burgh and Chad Le Clos. Currently leading the men’s rankings in the FINA World Cup series this season, Van Der Burgh is a breaststroke specialist and will be looking to make a statement this season following the surrender of his 50m and 100m world records at the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan.
Olympic 200m butterfly champion and reigning 100m butterfly world champion Chad Le Clos, a real Doha crowd favourite, is set to return to Hamad Aquatic Centre next month.
The Olympic gold medallist has a strong track record in the Qatari capital, having collected four individual titles in the 200m free, 50m, 100m and 200m butterfly and a World Record in the 100m at the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in Doha last year. Here, he also became the first male swimmer ever to win the three butterfly events in a single edition of the championships.
American Tom Shields, who has enjoyed a healthy rivalry with Le Clos over recent months will be back in Doha to face the South African once again this November. At last year’s FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in Doha, Le Clos denied Shields a bronze in the 100m butterfly but the gutsy American remains a common face in butterfly finals at major meets, placing in the final of the 200m and 100m butterfly with Le Clos in Kazan earlier this year.
Also on the hunt for glory in Doha will be Hungary’s golden boy, Daniel Gyurta, reigning 200m breaststroke Olympic Champion and former World Record holder in the discipline. H
aving only managed bronze at the FINA World Championships earlier this year, the Hungarian great will be looking to go better in Doha.
Gyurta’s compatriot, Katinka Hosszu will be making a welcome return to Hamad Aquatic Centre this November. Nicknamed the ‘Iron Lady’ and known for entering unprecedented numbers of events in a single meet, Hosszu made waves in Doha last year at both the FINA Swimming World Cup and the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m), taking eight medals in Qatar alone in 2014. FINA’s Female Athlete of the Year in 2014 and current leader in the FINA World Cup rankings so far this year with an astonishing 141-point lead, Hosszu will be looking to continue her dominance in Doha.
David Verraszto, a FINA World Championship silver medallist will also be representing the swimming powerhouse that is Hungary. No stranger to Qatar, Verraszto picked up a Men’s 400m Individual Medley bronze at the 2014 FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in Doha. The tickets for the event can be bought from Virgin Megastores and online for just QR10. More details can be found at www.qatarswimming.com.
