The first Qatari graduate from University of Calgary in Qatar (UCQ)’s Master of Nursing programme has stressed that she is focused on making a difference by sharing her knowledge with other healthcare professionals.
“Qatari women have an important role as examples to other women,” says Masheal Abdulla Jassim, clinical nurse specialist in colorectal surgery at Hamad General Hospital. “We Qatari nurses are few. There is a need and urgency for more of us to be educated to a high level.”
Masheal, a “proud contributor to health and wellness in Qatar”, adds: “We are part of a strong team at Hamad hospital, in which every specialty is both independent and collaborative. In patient care, no one is superior. The focus is always on the patient and their family, and on using evidence-based practice grounded in the best research to give the best care.”
“Master of Nursing graduates are making a significant contribution to healthcare in Qatar,” says Dr Janet Rankin, UCQ Graduate Programme co-ordinator. “Along with UCQ Master of Nursing graduate Samar Ali Abdul Kader and advanced clinical nurse specialist Andrea Benn, the three clinical nurse specialists in oncology work tirelessly to improve the care of patients undergoing bowel surgery.”
Recently, Masheal and Samar presented to other nurses as part of the Colorectal Symposium at Hamad Medical Corporation.
“UCQ strives to assist the nation in attaining the key goals set out in Qatar National Vision 2030 and National Health Strategy 2011-2016,” says dean and CEO Dr Kim Critchley. “UCQ’s nursing programs are designed to further develop a national workforce capable of delivering high-quality health services and research.”
They have already completed their studies and earned their degrees. Masheal, Samar and the seven other members of the UCQ Master of Nursing Class of 2015 will have their convocation at an official ceremony on November 26 at Qatar National Convention Centre.
That same night, Qatar’s healthcare system will see the addition of 75 highly educated UCQ Bachelor of Nursing graduates. Some 26% of these graduates are Qatar nationals.
Applications to the Bachelor of Nursing and Master of Nursing programmes are now open.
