The National Robot Olympiad (NRO) will go a long way in generating interest in science, research and technology among the country’s children, HE the Minister of Energy and Industry Dr Mohamed bin Saleh al-Sada has stressed.
He made the observation while speaking at a function held to honour the winners of the two-day 2015 Qatar NRO hosted by College of the North Atlantic - Qatar (CNA-Q) at the Al Shaqab Indoor Arena yesterday. Maersk Oil Qatar was the main sponsor of the event.
“It is a landmark event and a unique celebration of the budding talent of the science and technology community in Qatar. The amazing event has brought together the country’s brightest science students who have excelled themselves. I have no doubt that together you represent the very best of Qatar’s science and engineering talent,” said HE Dr al-Sada.
More than 1,000 children representing 265 teams from over 100 schools competed in the NRO. Of them, 34 teams have qualified for the World Robot Olympiad (WRO), which will be held at the same venue from November 6 to 8. About 3,000 participants from 50 countries are expected.
The NRO represents the culmination of the year-long school robotics programme, Go Robot.
Organised by CNA-Q and sponsored by Maersk Oil Qatar with the endorsement of the Supreme Education Council (SEC) and Qatar Petroleum, the Go Robot programme supports student engagement and skills in science, technology, engineering and maths (Stem) subjects, teacher training and development and promotes the application of technology to enhance the learning environment for students.
Maersk Oil Qatar deputy managing director Sheikh Faisal bin Fahad al-Thani, CNA-Q president Dr Ken MacLeod and director of the Education Institute at SEC, Fawziya al-Khater, congratulated the winning teams.

Regular category (junior level): Doha Modern Indian School (Eureka), Hamza Bin Abdul Muttalib Independent Preparatory School (Hamza_creator2), American School of Doha (Tin Men), Independent Team (FBI Fantastic Bot In) and Doha Modern Indian School (RB3).
Regular category (senior level): Doha Secondary Independent Boys (Electropositivity), Omar Bin Abdulaziz Secondary School for Boys (RoboBoys2), Omar Bin Abdulaziz Secondary School for Boys (RoboBoys1), Naser Bin Abdulla Secondary Boys (Nasser) and Birla Public School.
