Oman's Sultan Qaboos appeared in good health in images aired on state television on Monday of a rare public appearance since he returned in March from a lengthy stay in Germany for medical treatment.

The ruler, sporting a neatly trimmed beard, appeared focused during a cabinet meeting at the royal palace, as he talked and smiled at participants.

Sultan Qaboos, who will turn 75 this month, oversaw the measures taken by his country with the approach of cyclone Chapala, according to the official ONA news agency.

Oman meteorology directorate said on Twitter that the cyclone "is still classified as category 2 and expected to weaken to category 1 during the coming hours."

The unmarried sultan has rarely been seen in public since he flew home in March after more than eight months in Germany for medical treatment, prompting uncertainty over his successor.

Sultan Qaboos suffers from colon cancer, according to a diplomatic source in Muscat.

His two previous public appearances date back to April when he presided over a cabinet meeting and in July at the opening of a military museum, according to several sources.
