THE would-be PERFORMERS: The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra at an earlier concert in QNCC.

Nine promising concerts in a day

By Anand Holla

It sounds too fantastic to be true – a Friday in Qatar draped in swathes of lush symphony and soul-stirring melodies, from noon till night. But then some fantasies come true, as would this.
The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra presents nine concerts in one day – November 13 – at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC).
Of the nine, four are free for all. This means you can bring your family and friends and get wilfully lost in Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik by the Louise Bourgeois sculpture, The Spider, in QNCC’s sprawling lobby, or indulge the film-lover in you with Music from the Movies concert. As for the concerts requiring tickets such as Peter and the Wolf, prices are QR50 and QR100. Here is a run through the menu for a melodious Friday:
Mozart’s epic Eine Kleine Nachtmusic flags off the day at The Spider, from 2:30pm to 3pm, featuring Dmitri Torchinsky, violin; Nina Heidenreich, violin; Andrea Mereutza, viola; Christoph Schmitz, cello; and Sandor Onodi, double bass.
At 3pm, there’s the family concert of Sergei Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf at QNCC Auditorium 3, featuring Christoph Schmitz as narrator. The ticket price is QR50.
This will be followed up by the Brass Quintet, from 3:30pm to 4pm, at The Spider. Featuring Mia Buchignani, vocals; Soledad, violin; Christoph Schmitz, cello; Ferdinand Schäfer, percussion; and Joris Laenen, piano; the Tango Nuevo Project will take over the QNCC Theatre from 4pm to 4:45pm. They will perform pieces such as Ástor Piazzolla’s Libertango, Escualo, Yo soy Maria, and MAias Alyamani’s Tango O+.
From 4:30pm to 5pm, at The Spider, Mozart returns with Serenade for Winds No.12 in C Minor, K. 388 (384a). At 5pm, get ready for some music in the British brass band tradition with Brass and Percussion: From Baroque to Rock, at QNCC Auditorium 3. The ticket price is QR50.
From 5:30pm to 6pm, Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusic returns at The Spider. At the QNCC Theatre, at 6pm, conductor David Niemann and soprano Felicitas Fuchs join Elizaveta Hesse, violin; Eun-Hye Lee, piccolo; and Julie Sgarro, harp, for Music of the Baroque. The ticket price is QR50.
Making the most of the grandeur of QNCC is Music from the Movies, from 7pm to 7:45pm, at The Spider, by the Cinemoon Ensemble: Lorena Manescu, violin; Nina Heidenreich, violin; Raluca Stancel, violin; Islam Nour Eldin El-Hefnawy, violin; Merve Kenet-Bulun, viola; Ines Wein, viola; Hassan Moataz El Molla, cello; Radu L Mihaescu, double bass; and Ferdinand Schäfer, percussion.
The ensemble will play some delightful pieces – Henry Mancini: Salute to Mancini; Henry Mancini: Music From The Pink Panther; Henry Mancini: Moon River; Henry Mancini: Peter Gunn; Leonard Bernstein: From West Side Story: Tonight; Alan Menken: Arabian Nights; Alan Menken: From Aladdin: A Whole New World; Alan Menken: From Aladdin: Friend Like Me; Monty Norman: James Bond Theme; Paul and Linda McCartney: Live and Let Die; Marvin Hamlisch: Nobody Does it Better; John Barry: Goldfinger; Thomas Newman: Skyfall; and Hans Zimmer: Pirates of the Caribbean.
What better way to close an amazing evening than a Classical Hit Parade? At 8pm, at the QNCC Theatre, conductor David Niemann and soprano Felicitas Fuchs helm the final act, featuring Wael Binali: Earth; Nasser Nasseb: Al-Haneen; John Barry: Suite from James Bond 007; Dana Alfardan: Music Box; Alan Menken: Suite from Aladdin; John Williams: From ET, The Extra-Terrestrial: Adventure on Earth; Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op.67, First Movement; Edvard Grieg: From Peer Gynt, Op. 23: Morning Mood; Edvard Grieg: From Peer Gynt, Op. 23: In the Hall of the Mountain King.
These will be followed by Georges Bizet: From Carmen: Act 1 Prelude; Georges Bizet: From Carmen: Micaela’s aria, Je dis, que rien ne m`épouvante; Johannes Brahms: Hungarian Dance No.1; Johannes Brahms: Hungarian Dance No. 5; Giacomo Puccini: From Gianni Schicchi: O mio babbino caro; Manuel de Falla: Ritual Fire Dance from El amor brujo; Antonín Dvorák: Slavonic Dance, Op. 46, No. 8; Antonín Dvorák: From Rusalka Op. 114, Song to the Moon; and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36, Fourth Movement. The ticket price is QR100.
