Qatargas showcases ‘human development’ programme

Qatargas learning and development manager Adnan Hassan al-Shaibi presenting the paper ‘Quality Human Capital Development’.

Qatargas has delivered a paper highlighting its approach to quality human capital development during the 8th GCC Quality Conference held yesterday at the Sheraton Doha.
Qatargas learning and development manager Adnan Hassan al-Shaibi presented the paper ‘Quality Human Capital Development’ where he shared Qatargas’ experience in implementing and utilising talent management as a tool and process to ensure the presence of a high-calibre and diverse workforce, which is one of the five pillars of Qatargas’ direction statement.
Al-Shaibi said Qatargas’ talent management is the structured process that managers and supervisors use to define the skills, knowledge, and attitude required for different positions and checking via assessment and performance appraisal that the positions’ requirements are demonstrated by employees across the company.
“Skills are continuously developed. Any gaps identified from the performance management cycle, technical competence assessments, or development needs for future successors are addressed by tailored development plans.
“In this regard, Qatargas adopts the most effective ‘70-20-10’ formula to build people’s competence. This formula is based on the principle that people develop - 70% of their competencies from real life and on-the-job tasks and assignments, 20% from feedback and from observing and working with and being coached by role models, and 10% from formal training,” al-Shaibi said.
Al-Shaibi said Qatargas offers various programmes to attract Qatari nationals to its workforce and help develop their skills. Qatari nationals can join Qatargas as “graduates,” and a tailored programme called Individual Development Plan (IDP) is offered to them, which includes development of their behavioural and technical skills.
Qatari nationals joining the company as “trainees” are offered specially-designed programmes to develop their behavioural and technical skills. The company also sponsors and provides scholarships to selected Qatari nationals from universities and colleges who will be recruited as national graduates. Internships are offered to Qatari national high school and university students to provide them exposure to the LNG industry.
As a result of the quality of Qatargas’ human capital development programme, al-Shaibi said the company has earned several international accreditations, including the Gold level accreditation with “Investors in People,” an international business improvement tool administered by the UK Commission for Employment and Skills and supported by the Department for Business, Innovation, and Skills.
Qatargas was a Gold Sponsor of the conference, which was officially inaugurated by HE the Minister of Administrative Development Dr Issa Saad al-Jafali al-Nuaimi. Qatargas public relations manager Azam Abdul Aziz al-Mannai also received a memento from the Minister as a token of appreciation for Qatargas.
The 8th GCC Quality Conference, organised by Doha-based Gulf Development Centre, was attended by decision-makers, academicians, researchers, and delegates from government and non-governmental organisations, and public and private sector companies.
Main topics discussed at the conference included quality and human skills, the role of quality systems in developing human recourses, the commitment of top management and its role in corporate excellence, “Success Stories: Preparation of the Second Line Managers,” quality and customer satisfaction, and the role of human development in achieving customer satisfaction.
