Red-hot Stephen Curry was unstoppable from start to finish and the Golden State Warriors remained unbeatable.
The reigning league MVP, Curry hit eight triples en route to 46 points, and the defending NBA Champions set a franchise record on Thursday with their 10th straight victory to open the season, 129-116 over the stubborn Minnesota Timberwolves.
Golden State, the only unblemished team this season, also became just the 14th team in league history ever to start 10-0.
“Anytime you can do something that hasn’t been done in franchise history it’s huge,” said Curry after recording his third 40-point game of the season and 12th of his career.
“It doesn’t mean anything because we haven’t won a championship off of that. But it’s a good start to the season, the best start, obviously. We want to keep it going and we can still play better.”
Averaging a league-best 32 points per game, Curry put on another shooting clinic, hitting 15-of-25 field goals and 8-of-13 from behind the arc in 38 minutes.
“He was decent, he was OK tonight,” Warriors interim head coach Luke Walton said tongue-in-cheek. “He’s just so dangerous. He’s always in attack mode and definitely playing at an MVP level again, right now.”
Draymond Green collected 23 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds, Klay Thompson and Harrison Barnes netted 15 and 14, respectively for the Warriors, who shot a sizzling 54 per cent from the floor and 18-of-38 from behind the arc in the wire-to-wire win.
Golden State started fast, building a 16-point lead in the first quarter behind 21 points by Curry for a 40-27 advantage.
The gap grew to 18 in the second quarter en route to a 75-63 halftime cushion on Curry’s buzzer-beating layup.
The Warriors led by 21 in the third quarter and Curry’s back-to-back 3-pointers gave them a 97-76 margin entering the final stanza. But the young Timber pups wouldn’t go away.
With Curry resting, Minnesota went on an 18-2 run behind backups Kevin Martin and Andre Miller to pull within 99-94 early in the fourth frame. But Barnes and Green drained triples pushing the lead to eight.
The T-Wolves drew within 109-103 on a Nemanja Bjelica put-back midway through the final period. But Curry re-entered the game and quickly drilled a 3-pointer and jumper to open up a 114-105 advantage.
A triple by Bjelica brought the T-Wolves to within six but the Warriors went on a 7-2 surge, making it 121-110 with 3:27.
Ahead, 121-113, Curry banked in a jumper and the ensuing free throw before burying his final triple of the game with 30 ticks left to seal the Warriors’ milestone victory.
“You can’t depend on Steph to do that every game,” Green said of Curry’s explosion. “We’re not expecting it but it’s not surprising.”
Andrew Wiggins tossed in 19 points, rookie Karl Anthony Towns had 17 with 11 rebounds for the T-Wolves (4-4) who fell to 0-4 at home this season.
Phoenix Suns 118, LA Clippers 104: Brandon Knight matched his season-high with 37 points, Eric Bledsoe added 26 with 10 rebounds and nine assists, and the host Suns (4-4) routed the short-handed Clippers to stop a two-game slide.
The Clippers (5-4) were already without starters Chris Paul (groin strain), J.J.Redick (back spasms) and lost another, Blake Griffin who was ejected with his second technical foul late in the second quarter after complaining about a missed call.
Miami Heat 92, Utah Jazz 91: Chris Bosh scored 25 points, Tyler Johnson added 17 and the short-handed Heat edge the visiting Jazz for a third straight win.
Slovenian Goran Dragic had 14 points and Hassan Whiteside grabbed 14 rebounds for Miami (5-3), playing without star guard Dwyane Wade, excused because one of his sons was hospitalized for undisclosed reasons.
