Stephen Curry didn’t look like a superstar and the Golden State Warriors didn’t look like defending NBA champions, but they still managed to escape with a victory over the lowly but lively Brooklyn Nets Saturday.
Curry overcame some sloppiness to score 34 points, helping the Warriors dominate overtime to remain unbeaten with a 107-99 home victory over the Nets, who wasted several chances at victory.
Draymond Green had a triple-double with 16 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds for the Warriors (11-0), who rallied from an early 17-point deficit, but still were on the verge of an embarrassing loss to the Nets (1-9) before rallying in the fourth quarter and pulling away in the extra session.
“We were struggling with them all night,” Green said. “We finally were able to get stops down the stretch and that’s what won it for us.”
Golden State completed its comeback without much help down the stretch from Curry, the NBA’s leading scorer, who made just 13 of 31 shots, including five of 16 from three-point range. The reigning most valuable player missed a layup and committed a turnover in the final 30 seconds of regulation.
Curry had a pass deflected and stolen by Thaddeus Young, whose two free throws gave Brooklyn a 97-94 lead with 9.9 seconds left. But Andre Iguodala tied it with a three-pointer with 5.9 seconds remaining. “We were going to (intentionally) foul but we didn’t,” Nets coach Lionel Hollins said.
The Nets squandered two more chances to win in regulation. Jarrett Jack missed a 15-footer, but the rebound was knocked out of bounds by Curry with half a second to go. Brook Lopez missed an easy lob at the rim off an inbounds pass from Joe Johnson.
“I thought it was the game,” Green admitted. “I owe Joe,” said Lopez, who scored 18 points. “He put that on a platter. I blew it.”
The Warriors scored the first 10 points of overtime as Iguodala had a steal that set up a dunk by Shaun Livingston and dunked himself. Iguodala scored seven of his 15 points in the last seven minutes.
Young made his first eight shots, including a short jumper early in the second quarter that gave Brooklyn a 40-23 advantage, Golden State’s largest deficit of the season.
The Warriors trailed, 77-70, entering the fourth quarter before Curry finally got going with two three-pointers and a layup that gave Golden State an 86-85 lead with 4:37 remaining.
There were five lead changes in the last two minutes. Jack’s free throws gave Brooklyn a 95-94 lead with 29 seconds left and Curry missed a layup, but Jack got trapped in the backcourt for a turnover.
“My guys played their hearts out,” Hollins said. “We just didn’t execute perfectly in the times that we needed to to win the game.”
Australia’s Andrew Bogut had 10 points and 18 rebounds for the Warriors. Jack scored 28 points with nine assists and Young added 26 with 10 rebounds for the Nets, who went 1-3 on their road trip.
“It’s gonna be a long flight home,” Lopez said.
