Man ordered to compensate woman for work delay

Doha

The Court of Appeal has ordered a man to pay a sum of QR31,000 to a Qatari woman for a delay in undertaking some contracting works.

The man was under the sponsorship of a contracting firm, against which a case was originally filed by the woman for the delay, but did not actually work for it, it was later learnt.

The woman had filed the case against the company due to a 31-day delay in installing a natural stone façade in her villa, local Arabic daily Arrayah reported.

She requested for a refund of QR40,000, the first instalment she had paid to the company, a compensation of QR150,000 for the delay and QR60,000 as damages, the report said.

However, it later came to light that the woman had paid the sum to a person who, though officially sponsored by the contracting firm, did not actually work for it or represent it. Besides, he had given her cheques, as a guarantee, which were signed personally and not by the company. As things turned out, there was not enough balance in the account.

Accordingly, the court found that the company did not violate any of the agreement clauses as the woman had paid the money to a person not directly related to the company.

The court ordered the man to pay a sum of QR40,000 to the woman, with QR9,000 to be deducted from this amount as the value of the work already done. Besides, he could reclaim the unused stone that did not meet the standards agreed to by the client.
