Ponfeigh, owned by Hassan Ali Abdulmalik, won the Barzan Cup, a Class 1 feature race for thoroughbreds at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club here yesterday.
Debbie Mountain’s charge ended a string of five second-place finishes with a half length victory over Crafted, owned by Ibrahim Saeed al-Malki, and Amico Mio, owned by Sheikh Nasser bin Abdullah bin Nasser al-Thani.
Gerald Avranche rode Zakhir Stud’s Naamah to her second career victory, the first being in March earlier this year, in the Local Purebred Arabian Guineas for four-year-olds. Al-Ghazali-schooled Ain Jalout, owned by Khalifa bin Sheail al-Kuwari, missed out by a neck while another al-Ghazali charge Al Murabitoon finished third.
Zakhir Stud had another winner in the 1600m Purebred Arabian Guineas with Avranche riding Zameer to a win ahead of Kimfalah and AJS Intifadah.
Earlier in the day, Intishar gave Jassim al-Ghazali his only win of the day by shedding his maiden status. The Injaaz Stud-owned bay colt won the Local Purebred Arabian Maiden Plate ahead of Rawaa, owned by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al-Thani, and Al Mundher, owned by Nasser Abdullah Khalifa al-Attiyah.
In the Thoroughbred Guineas, Crescent, trained by Ahmed Kobeissi, won the Conditions race for three-year-olds ahead of Al-Ghazali-trained duo of The Blue Eye and Lieutenant Kaffee.
Umm Qarn’s Ibn Ibn Djel Bon, trained by Alban de Mieulle, raced to a two-length victory over Al Jeryan Stud’s Almuheet in the 1200m Purebred Arabian Guineas. Djelamer, also trained by De Mieulle and the winner’s half-brother from sire Amer, finished third.
