The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), Qatar Section, held its second Women in Energy Event in Doha recently.
The event was attended by some 50 female oil and gas professionals and students.
SPE Qatar Section is chaired by Sheikh Faisal bin Fahad al-Thani, deputy managing director at Maersk Oil Qatar.
“Working in a male-dominated industry such as oil and gas, women often put their health and eating habits as the last priority. As a result, they might be hit with lifestyle, chronic and acute ailments like obesity, backache, hypertension, depression, diabetes, high cholesterol, heart, kidney disease and many others,” according to a statement. “As the workload increases, women pay less attention to what they eat or how much physical activity they have, resulting in productivity loss and poor health choices.”
In order to assist working women and draw attention to this critical issue, SPE Qatar Section invited local health coaches and plant-based vegans to share their stories and advise on better and healthier lifestyle alternatives for working women.
The speakers, Ghanim al-Sulaiti, Saba Rahbar and Setareh Raeisi, shared their stories and presented methods of recovering from unhealthy diets and developing better eating habits, resulting in a healthier and more balanced lifestyle as well as higher work productivity and better day-to-day performance.
SPE Qatar Section’s mission is to collect, disseminate and exchange technical knowledge concerning the exploration, development and production of oil and gas resources and related technologies for public benefit, as well as to provide opportunities for professionals to enhance their technical and professional competence, the statement adds.
In Qatar, there are more than 435 professional members and over 159 student members at Qatar University and Texas A&M University at Qatar.
