A court yesterday sent Assam separatist leader Anup Chetia to 14 days in judicial custody.
The general secretary of the United Liberation Front of Assam was brought to Assam on a transit remand on November 18 and was produced before a special Central Bureau of Investigation judge here. The court remanded him in five-day CBI custody.
Chetia was deported to India from Bangladesh on November 11.
“As the five days remand of the CBI expired today, the central agency produced Chetia in the court today. The CBI did not seek further custody of Chetia and so the court sent him to 14 days judicial custody,” Chetia’s lawyer Bijan Mahajan said. “He would be lodged in Guwahati Central Jail and the court has also asked the jail authorities to arrange good food and medicines for Chetia during the custody,” said Mahajan.
Mahajan added that they would move the court soon for the release of Chetia.
Chetia had been lodged in different jails in Bangladesh since 1997, when he was arrested by the Bangladeshi police for entering the country on fake documents and possessing illegal foreign currency and arms.
Upon his arrival in India on November 11, the CBI arrested him in connection with a murder case in 1988 in Assam’s Golaghat district.
Chetia is expected to join the ULFA faction which is in peace talks with the central government since 2010.
