The International Centre for Sport Security (ICSS) has continued to demonstrate its commitment to enhancing integrity in sport today by announcing the appointment of one of the world’s leading anti-corruption experts, Dale Sheehan (pictured), to its team.
As a former assistant commissioner with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), and director at Interpol, Sheehan guided the development and implementation of Interpol’s prevention, education and training partnership with FIFA to combat match-fixing in football, as well as implementing a similar programme with the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Sheehan joins the ICSS Sport Integrity unit as director of Capacity Building and Education, adding further gravitas and critical support to the organisation’s global anti-corruption efforts in sport.
Sheehan adds to the ICSS a wealth of valuable international anti-corruption experience, including 30 years with the RCMP, and seven years with Interpol, where he led Interpol’s operational training and development requirements for 190 member countries. In 2014 he also oversaw the move of Interpol’s Police Training and Development from France to Singapore.
Speaking of his appointment, Sheehan said: “In the past, I always gravitated towards the sports section first. The sports pages were always filled with positive stories of overcoming barriers, triumph, perseverance and teamwork. Nowadays, sport seems to be making headlines for all the wrong reasons.
“As an international organisation working to benefit and safeguard sport, the ICSS is recognised globally for its work and has become a leading voice for stronger anti-corruption and integrity practices in the sports industry.
“I am delighted to join the ICSS Sport Integrity team and look forward to supporting the ICSS in its mission to safeguard sport.”
ICSS director general Helmut Spahn said: “As the ICSS continues to grow and expand, the appointment of someone of the experience, stature and quality of Dale Sheehan is a crucial addition to the team.
“With his extensive knowledge and understanding of anti-corruption techniques, Dale will add further international expertise to the ICSS and his appointment will serve as a reminder of our ongoing commitment to safeguarding sport and developing a global, cross-sector approach to sport safety, security and integrity.”
ICSS executive director of Sport Integrity Chris Eaton said: “As many organisations in sport are currently failing to protect not only their administrations, but also clean athletes from corruption, doping and fixing, the appointment of Dale is a timely and heavyweight addition to the ICSS.
