Inter Milan crushed Frosinone 4-0 late Sunday with Jonathan Bibiany, Mauro Icardi, Jaison Murillo and Marcelo Brozovic on target to leapfrog Napoli and Fiorentina, taking a two-point lead at the top of the Italian Serie A.
The evening game at the Giuseppe Meazza saw Inter attack from the start, but their goalkeeper Samir Handanovic had to make the game’s first tough save on seven minutes to deflect a spectacular volley from Danilo Soddimo.
Bibiany then fired home in the 29th minute after Nicola Leali parried a nasty effort from Adem Ljajic, who on 53 set up Icardi to slam into the open goal.
Ljajic assisted Murillo and substitute Brozovic for two more late goals.
Napoli sit second on 28 points from 13 games and welcome Inter on November 30. They temporarily went top earlier Sunday as forward Lorenzo Insigne netted the opener and set up Gonzalo Higuain in a 2-0 defeat of struggling Verona.
Higuain now tops the scorers’ chart with 10 goals, while second bottom Verona had veteran Luca Toni returning from injury.
“We have been united and alert as we scored in a quite difficult match,” Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri said.
“The league is still long. Now it’s useless to look at the standings. Today it was crucial to break the deadlock against such an aggressive opponent. I’m proud of what we have achieved up to now, and I’m satisfied with our defence, because when we manage to take control we have quality and strength up front in order to convert.”
Also on 28, but trailing Napoli goal difference, are Fiorentina, who were held 2-2 at home to Empoli, rallying from two goals down thanks to a brace by Nikola Kalinic.
Fiorentina fell behind as Marko Livaja fired into the roof of the net on 17 minutes, and Marcel Buchel found the low right corner from outside the area 10 minutes later.
La Viola improved after the break. The substitute Kalinic levelled with a header in the 56th minute and a flick five minutes later, off feeds from Marcos Alonso and Khouma Babacar, respectively. Kalinic, who had a possible winner in the 79th denied by the crossbar, raised his tally to nine goals, level with Sampdoria’s Eder.
Elsewhere, Genoa beat Sassuolo 2-1 from a last-gasp goal by Leonardo Pavoletti after his team-mate Diego Perotti and visitors’ striker Domenico Berardi were dismissed for clashing off the ball.
Sampdoria crashed 1-0 at Udinese with new coach Vincenzo Montella at the helm, and the Genoa side had Ervin Zukanovi dismissed in the 90th minute.
Torino won 1-0 at Atalanta, Lazio were held 1-1 at home to Palermo, and Chievo won 2-1 at tail-enders Carpi.
Saturday action saw fourth-place Roma (27 points) being held to a 2-2 draw at Bologna and champions Juventus beat AC Milan 1-0 to go sixth on 21.
All the weekend games of the top flight were preceded by the French national anthem, with French flags flown in memory of the victims of last week’s terrorist attacks in Paris.
